Bringing a new dog into your home is an exciting time but also brings with it a real responsibility of care for a living, breathing, intelligent animal.

Your new dog will need daily exercise, food and water. He will need his vaccinations, neutering and, no doubt, many unforeseen trips to the vet. He will need treating for fleas and ticks often and treatment for worms. He will in return bring you years of loyal affection, companionship and love.

It is very important, however, to choose the right dog for you and your family. If you live in a small apartment with limited time to spend exercising your dog then a high energy border collie is not going to be the right fit for you and you may end up with some impossible to live with behavioural problems.

Research your breed options to give yourself an idea of what you are getting in to, and be honest with the amount of time you are willing to spend excersing, grooming or playing with your dog.
