What is Flyball?
Flyball is a fast moving, energetic, exciting team sport. Dogs run a ‘flyball’ course in teams of 4 like a relay race. Each dog jumps 4 hurdles down a racing lane retreiving a ball at the end released from
the flyball box. They return over the hurdles with the ball to the start line at which point the next dog in the team is sent off. The first team with all 4 dogs to have correctly completed the course is the winner.
Who can take part?
The joy of Flyball is that any dog can take part. Any breed, any age, any size. Dogs younger than a year can attend classes and start training but as they are still growing this has to be approached with care. The ideal Flyball dog is fast, enthusiastic and loves playing with balls. You, as a handler, need to have a reasonable level of control over your dog as this is an off-lead game but this can be taught.
History of Flyball
Flyball is a relatively new sport starting in the USA in the 1970′s with a group of trainers in Southern California. Beginning as a scent – hurdle course it soon evolved into a ball retreive. It started to become popular in the UK in the 1990′s and is now widely practised all over Europe.
